Dalton M. Night Assignments

Assignment 1: Reasons for Writing

Elie Wiesel

Elie Wiesel decided to write the memoir Night because he felt he needed to share his

experience in Auschwitz and Buchenwald with other people. He also felt that he wrote it to understand

“The nature of madness that had erupted in history and in the conscience of mankind”. Or even to

preserve a record of the experience of the camps when he was a teenager. Maybe he wanted to remind

people how terrifying I was, so it would not happen again. He does not want these atrocious crimes to

be forgotten, and the perpetrators forgiven. Last, he could have written it because he refuses to forget

his mother, sisters, and father.
